Karl Smith is a Melbourne singer-songwriter and the voice of Sodastream, Lee Memorial and Thermos Cardy.

In 1997 Karl formed Sodastream. Soon after the release of their first EP Enjoy and Karl’s solo 7-inch single, The Sky Is Beginning to Bruise, Sodastream were invited to play in Europe on the back of support from eminent UK DJ, John Peel. On arrival in London, Sodastream signed with Tugboat Records, through Rough Trade and released four albums, four EPs and toured Europe, USA, Japan and Australia many times.

Sodastream called it a day in 2007 and Karl turned his hand to writing, working on short stories, children’s fiction and screenwriting. However, finding it too hard to stay away from music he formed Lee Memorial in 2009 with members of Sleater Kinney, The Nation Blue and Paradise Motel and released The Lives of Lee Memorial through Dot Dash/Remote Control. The band toured Australia then followed the album with a slew of digital singles in 2011.

While on hiatus with Lee Memorial in 2011, Karl began writing the songs that would end up on his first solo album due to be released in 2013.
