Melbourne modern folk auteur Laura Jean returns with First Love Song, the lead single from her upcoming self-titled album. Laura recorded the album in the UK with producer John Parish, revered for his work with PJ Harvey over the course of her career. Rising Norwegian artist Jenny Hval sings backing vocals throughout the album.
Premiered this week on popmatters.com, First Love Song evokes a luminous midway point between the thrill of a new relationship, and the growing awareness of patterns established by relationships past.
The album Laura Jean is a return to the intimate folk settings of her earlier work, after the rock dynamics of 2011’s celebrated A fool who’ll. It sees Laura alternate between disarmingly intimate portraits of domestic life and more allegorical tales of a dream world.
