Darren Sylvester is an internationally acclaimed visual artist, and a debonair pop genius.
Darren Sylvester is an internationally acclaimed visual artist, renowned for his multidisciplinary practices in photography, sculpture, video, performance and music. His work is held in the collections of the National Galleries of Victoria, New South Wales and Western Australia.
He is also a debonair synth-pop genius and a searing guitar hero, inspired equally by Foreigner and Billy Idol's axeman Steve Stevens. Darren's 2008 self-titled debut album, originally self- released on vinyl as part of an exhibition at Brisbane’s Gallery Of Modern Art (and later released on CD by Unstable Ape), was a favourite at Chapter Music HQ. Sylvester learned how to play guitar, keyboards and bass, and how to program drum machines especially for this project, which in turn led to him playing his first live shows. His first gig was also Chapter labelmates Beaches' first gig.
Sylvester went on to tour the US with fellow electronic popsmith Super Melody, and has shared Australian stages with the likes of Jens Lekman, John Grant and World’s End Press.
Chapter Music released Darren Sylvester’s second album Off By Heart in October 2013, taking audio cues from the 80s output of Compass Point Studios, where the likes of Grace Jones, Talking Heads and even Serge Gainsbourg recorded.
